| jackson conti - sujinho |
| So, Madlib loves Brasilian music eh? Professing his love for Brasilian music and especially that of Ivan 'Mamao' Conti, the incredible session drummer well known for his work with legendary group Azymuth, and participant in the Brasil leg of the Keepintime project from a couple of years back. Madlib has obviously relished this opportunity to work with one of his heros and the results are total gold, marrying the slinky rhythmic charge of Conti with Madlib's inimitable musical mind to create a future summer staple. The album runs through classic Brasilian standards from the greats of mid sixties to early sevenites like Luiz Eca, Chico Buarque, Joao Donato, Baden and Vinicius, Marcos Valle, Dom Um Romao, Airto Moreira or Azymuth, and mixes them with new tracks devised from the sessions and scultped by Madlib into the breezy summer winners packed into the 18 tracks on offer. |

| WATUSSI - tequila sangre y fuego |
|
Pronounced “Wah-too-see”, this Sydney based 8 piece is made up of mostly Colombians who blend Afro-latin rhythms with reggae, funk and rock The album title translates to ‘Tequila, Blood and Fire’ which captures their essence, both as an upbeat party rockin festival band and some of the political views about their home country.

Intense touring schedule taking in all of most of the country (including numerous festivals) over summer 2007-2008. This band is building a strong following on the back of their incredible live show. | cookin on 3 burners - baked, broiled, & fried |
|
Cookin On 3 Burners are Jake Mason, Ivan Khatchoyan and Lance Ferguson, a three piece powerhouse who serve up the rawest in deep funk, jazz, boogaloo and soul. Led by a wailing Hammond Organ, they are distinctly different to many other funk acts, yet you’ll be no stranger to the grooves and pounding drums .
After a number of Melbourne residencies and a self released 7”, the group came to local prominence with the ‘Cressy St Breakdown’ 12” released on Knowfoowl thru USA’s Groove Distribution. This was followed by the re-release of ‘Gravel Rash’ through UK’s Freestyle label and then a follow up 7” ‘Keb’s Bucket’ (an ode to the Scottish DJ’s legendary pee bucket he needs when he plays for many hours). The group have continued to play across Sydney and Melbourne over the last 12 months, with highlight gigs including the support for Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings 06 Sydney show, support for Breakestra’s Music Man Miles DJ show in Melbourne and a mammoth 3 gigs in under 24 hours over the 07 ANZAC day holiday in Sydney.
Baked Broiled & Fried is one of the strongest rootsy funk albums to ever come from Australia. The band’s ability to switch between Meters-esque funk head nodders, to more complicated Boogaloo and swing tempos sets them apart from the straight funk scene. Teaming up with vocalists Fallon Williams and Kylie Auldist, the band cast their net even further across the soul spectrum.

| 2up - the boomin ep |
Joined by legendary Hip Hop ambassador and producer DJ Soup (John Blake, also of the newly reformed Fonke Knomaads), 2UP’s return is like a monster unleashed on a city. The combination of straight-up party rhymes and a gritty-funk-meets-club-banger beat are undeniably effective as the boys leave the narratives aside and deliver a massive club tune.
Also lending a hand are co-founding members Mez & Diverse and 2UP’s new touring DJ Noel Boogie, who has the rep of a seasoned turntable warrior the world over having supported every notable hip hop act to tour Australia. Mez and Diverse re-recorded and produced their now classic contributions to the Players Club and Tastes Like Chicken releases in collaboration with the country’s best, including William Bowden on mastering.
For added fire Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity recording artists from Melbourne The Bamboos turn out a 3 minute instrumental deep funk rendition of Club Shakers that’s sure to get a caning by DJs on the up coming vinyl release.
